First Week Assignment (Assignment 1)

Why Did The Titanic Hit The Iceberg?

http://www.titanicuniverse.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Titanic2.jpg

Well,it's an interesting topic to be discussed with. Many of the researchers had tried their best to prove their theories but none of them could 100 percent assure it. In the end, they only could come out with the most reasonable theory. Even the well know film director, James Cameron and his crew had their own theories on how this unsinkable big metal ship sunk.

So what are my theories of "Why Did The RMS Titanic Hit The Iceberg"?

1. The iceberg was an "unpredictable guest".

Simply because of the iceberg was floating in a direct movement towards the Titanic and it was   unpredictable by the captain and when he did it was too late. In other words, the wave pushed the iceberg toward the Titanic's sailing route and caused this collision.

2. The lack of advance navigation system.

Due to the olden days, navigation system was not that advance. They did not have radar detective system to detect obstacles. Thus the iceberg was undetectable until it really close to the ship and by that time it was too late for the ship to respond as it was moving in a high speed.

3. Problems of the turning system.

To make an extreme turn to avoid a hit on the iceberg is quite impossible with a ship so large plus sailing with a high speed. Furthermore a sudden extreme turn may also jammed the system causing it unable to be turned. These caused a head on collision between the Titanic and the iceberg.

4. Wrong decision of the Captain.

When the captain found out the iceberg maybe the ship was not directly straight ahead but in a safe distance beside the iceberg. So the captain decided not to do anything just safely sailing ahead. But what he could not predict was that the iceberg was larger that what he could think of. What he saw was only a small part of the the iceberg and the large part was beneath the sea and the Titanic was not in a safe distance and so they collided.

5. Miss communication between the captain and the observer.

When the observer has found out the iceberg there was a probability of communication error between he and the captain and caused the captain to not respond in time. We also may say that the captain was not in a good mood and he did not border to listen to anyone that time included the observer's report.

6. The replaced captain.

As the ship was loaded with many rich people maybe the captain was highly paid to allow one of them to sail the ship. As the rich guy or woman was not a professional sailor the ship collided the iceberg.

What Is This Object Of Curiosity? What Does It Do? How And Why?

Copied from Mr. Yap's post on MMLS

This was the pink toy that I have mentioned in my previous post. Mr. Yap was playing with it during our first Creative Studies lecture and he even came out with different ways of using it or what does it do. Well he was creative enough with his idea of music instrument and anti rudeness capper but let's see whether I can be more creative than him!

1. It is just a modeling toy.

As simple as that, the inner part is hollow cylinder in shape so it could be use to create a cylinder plasticine  It is commonly seen in the kid's plasticine toy.

2. It is a part of toilet paper roll holder.

The hollow part maybe can be used to install on something similar like a knot so I come out with this idea.Imagine that your toilet paper roll holder is a hook design type and once you have put the paper in,you need to secure the paper from dropping out from the side. Thus this is the "knot" to secure at the side.

3. It is an opener.

I focused on the bottom circle shape and think of it can be used to punch a hole which mostly is used to open the aluminium cover of drinks.Just aim at the mouth of the drink container which sealed by the aluminium paper then apply some push and "Walla!" a hole is pinched and you can enjoy your drinks.

4. A candle holder.

What can the hollow part does?Maybe to contain something?Yes it could, just like a simple candle holder to prevent the wax from dropping around.

5. A special light refractor.

The whole structure is kind of transparent in red so put a light bulb or LED in it and see the magic of the refracted light! Yes, you got your special effect lighting!
