Second Week Assignment (Assignment 1)

5 Words Associated To "Creativity"

When thinking of creativity some popular words that associated with it are "different", "color", "abnormal" and "new". Below are my 5 words and reasons.

1. Fun

Obviously when you are playing around with creativity you need the element of fun! Doing creativity with fun will motivate you to enjoy seeking new idea and you will definitely feel happy to undergoes any hardships. The more fun you have, the more enjoy you are and thus the more creative you are!

2. Craziness

You need to go crazy sometimes to enable finding new idea. Our thought are full of built in knowledge, our views are fixed since the day we born and many of us think by following what we learnt from the books and theories and these have hindered us to think creatively. Thus thinking with the right amount of craziness allow us to think in many different perspective without restriction and so we could come out with many kinds of new ideas.

3.Special

Creativity is specialty. How much creative you are is always by looking at how special is your creation is. A special creation or idea produces unique structure where there is no same product in the world. Special may not necessary be a new thing but something different than anything that already existed.

4.Brave

To be creative you need to be brave. Sometimes people just don't agree with your creative idea and this is where bravery comes in. You need to be brave to believe in your creativity, be brave to accept comments on your idea and also brave to speak out your idea to people. If you are not brave enough to do so, people will not know your creativity!

5.Testing

Creativity is a process. People don't come out with new idea in a one shot. There is always a flow of process. They think, they try, they failed and they think again just like Thomas Edison, in other words they always test. This process is repeated until they come out with an useful success idea. You will never know which idea is the most creative until you try them out one by one and so, testing associated creativity.

5 Words Not Associated To "Creativity"

It is quite interesting to think in an opposite way. Some of us came out with interesting words such as "coward", "mainstream", "homeless", "sadness" and even "politic". Well below are my version.

1.Restriction

Creativity should not has restriction as it prevents to think creatively. Creativity should not bind with restriction such as the rules and laws of physics and all the built in knowledge and theories in the world. Think of it, if you think by following these laws you will not have the "Tom and Jerry" cartoon.
2. Same

Creativity has nothing to do with this word. You are free to copy or use some of the old or existed creations and improvise it with your own new idea but not 100 per cent follow exactly the same. If you do so, that is not creativity it is just repeating what we have already created.

3. Boring

People always find creative things interesting whether they are good or bad. If they look or see your idea as boring that means they have already heard that somewhere before you spoken it. In other words it means that you are repeating a preexisted idea which also means that your idea is not special.

4. Satisfaction

Creativity must not do with satisfaction. If you do so, you will not continue to think in many perspective and to seek more idea. You can agree with your idea but not satisfy with it! Try thinking if people are satisfied with the computers and if so we will not have the electronic tablets now.

5. Laziness

You will not be succeed if you don't start to give out your first step. As simple as that, you will not have creativity if you are lazy to find the way to achieve that.

Respond And Reflect To The Ken Robinson 2006 Ted Talk Episode On Creativity Education And Intelligence

Kindly check out the link to learn more of Sir Ken Robinson's Talk

Hearing Mr. Ken Robinson's talk has really stroke me of the important of having creativity in education! I am truly agree when he said that "If we are not prepared to be wrong we will never come out with anything original". This bring back of my childhood memory.

When I was first in kindergarten my teacher once asked me what "1 + 1" is so without any hesitation I answered "11". You may think how cute was I giving such nonsense answer but think deeply this happened in you too! I mean you did have once given this kind of answer right? But to be honest it is not wrong of saying "1 + 1 = 11". If you really put "1" with another "1" it is "11"!

As time past by, I soon sat for my kindergarten exam and I came across with the same question again. But this time I answered "2". Why? The answer is simple because I was afraid.  I was afraid of putting "11" as I know I wont get any marks if I did so and people would look at me in a weird way. Because of  I was afraid to undergoes any of these so I put "2".

Subconsciously, we do have ideas to do things differently or creatively but because we dare not to try out the ideas as we worry that that may triggered any unwanted problems and we are so afraid to counter them, thus we began to ignore that thought but follow what have already given. As time past by, that thought, the thought of doing think creatively has been locked up, hidden beneath our mind !

Education indeed is the problem. Teachers follow everything in the books and written them exactly on the blackboard. What leave for the students to do are just accepting all the knowledge without any thinking and questioning, nothing but absorbing it passively. The scenario in here is, they implant students with preexisted knowledge but do not teach them to seek alternative knowledge in them.

This eventually creates people that don't have their own idea. People who do not create new knowledge but only follow. If so, we will only have what we already had through out the centuries and nothing new would be created. Thus we need creativity in education. Be brave to think,be brave to do, be brave to make mistakes so that we can find new ways to correct the mistakes and we find our way to create new things!

Second Day Of Creative Studies

"Huh" Finally! I have finished my other subject assignments and have the free time to type my blog. I am tired now but I want to keep the experiences fresh!

29 Oct 2012 was my second Creative Studies lecture. After submitted my blog URL address, the lecture began with a 45 minutes discussion on the object of curiosity. I'm gonna give a "Wow" to this section cause some even related the object to SEX! But what Mr. Yap was trying to tell us is that we should analyse our idea. Always think of "why do I think of that (what is this?)", "how do I come out with that", "what are the features that triggered me to think that", "am I looking at its shape?" or "is it the way it look that gives me the idea?". These related to the layer of creativity or the process of thinking. Do imagine the whole scenario of using the idea like why use it that way or how to use it. By analyzing this way there is value in our creativity not just coming out with any special ideas without meanings.

Another interesting thing that I have learnt was that by asking reverse questions sometimes will discover interesting answers. When Mr. Yap asked us to list down the words that associated to creativity we automatically came out with all the art fundamental words such as "color, pattern, line, shape, fun, different, and new'. But when we came across to the opposite, we answered "homeless, coward, sadness, politic and mainstream".

Finally, we began our lecture of the day, "Defining Creativity". As I have mentioned before, creativity is finding new way of doing thing which is useful. It associates with madness, inspiration, imagination even value (as creativity is now a big business, it has currency". Creativity is ability, the ability to imagine or invent new things with value without breaking basic ground rules. It is attitude, the ability to accept change or new things by knowing how far is our limitation is. It is process to think or to work through. But the most interesting thing was said by Ken Robinson

Ken Robinson

http://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html "creativity is as important as education as literacy!"

With that, the lecture ended at 12 p.m.  Before it ended, Mr. Yap reminded us not only special talented people are creative, not only artists need to be creative and we should think a new way of saying the old if you can't think new things and last but not least be prepared to make mistake and allow yourself to do so as without wrong we could not come out anything original!

First Week Assignment (Assignment 1)

Why Did The Titanic Hit The Iceberg?

http://www.titanicuniverse.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Titanic2.jpg

Well,it's an interesting topic to be discussed with. Many of the researchers had tried their best to prove their theories but none of them could 100 percent assure it. In the end, they only could come out with the most reasonable theory. Even the well know film director, James Cameron and his crew had their own theories on how this unsinkable big metal ship sunk.

Kindly follow this link to learn more!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s584LR4e8qY&feature=related

So what are my theories of "Why Did The RMS Titanic Hit The Iceberg"?

1. The iceberg was an "unpredictable guest".

Simply because of the iceberg was floating in a direct movement towards the Titanic and it was   unpredictable by the captain and when he did it was too late. In other words, the wave pushed the iceberg toward the Titanic's sailing route and caused this collision.

2. The lack of advance navigation system.

Due to the olden days, navigation system was not that advance. They did not have radar detective system to detect obstacles. Thus the iceberg was undetectable until it really close to the ship and by that time it was too late for the ship to respond as it was moving in a high speed.

3. Problems of the turning system.

To make an extreme turn to avoid a hit on the iceberg is quite impossible with a ship so large plus sailing with a high speed. Furthermore a sudden extreme turn may also jammed the system causing it unable to be turned. These caused a head on collision between the Titanic and the iceberg.

4. Wrong decision of the Captain.

When the captain found out the iceberg maybe the ship was not directly straight ahead but in a safe distance beside the iceberg. So the captain decided not to do anything just safely sailing ahead. But what he could not predict was that the iceberg was larger that what he could think of. What he saw was only a small part of the the iceberg and the large part was beneath the sea and the Titanic was not in a safe distance and so they collided.

5. Miss communication between the captain and the observer.

When the observer has found out the iceberg there was a probability of communication error between he and the captain and caused the captain to not respond in time. We also may say that the captain was not in a good mood and he did not border to listen to anyone that time included the observer's report.

6. The replaced captain.

As the ship was loaded with many rich people maybe the captain was highly paid to allow one of them to sail the ship. As the rich guy or woman was not a professional sailor the ship collided the iceberg.

What Is This Object Of Curiosity? What Does It Do? How And Why?

Copied from Mr. Yap's post on MMLS

This was the pink toy that I have mentioned in my previous post. Mr. Yap was playing with it during our first Creative Studies lecture and he even came out with different ways of using it or what does it do. Well he was creative enough with his idea of music instrument and anti rudeness capper but let's see whether I can be more creative than him!

1. It is just a modeling toy.

As simple as that, the inner part is hollow cylinder in shape so it could be use to create a cylinder plasticine  It is commonly seen in the kid's plasticine toy.

2. It is a part of toilet paper roll holder.

The hollow part maybe can be used to install on something similar like a knot so I come out with this idea.Imagine that your toilet paper roll holder is a hook design type and once you have put the paper in,you need to secure the paper from dropping out from the side. Thus this is the "knot" to secure at the side.

3. It is an opener.

I focused on the bottom circle shape and think of it can be used to punch a hole which mostly is used to open the aluminium cover of drinks.Just aim at the mouth of the drink container which sealed by the aluminium paper then apply some push and "Walla!" a hole is pinched and you can enjoy your drinks.

4. A candle holder.

What can the hollow part does?Maybe to contain something?Yes it could, just like a simple candle holder to prevent the wax from dropping around.

5. A special light refractor.

The whole structure is kind of transparent in red so put a light bulb or LED in it and see the magic of the refracted light! Yes, you got your special effect lighting!

First Day Of Creative Studies

To be honest blogging is kind of my 1st experience as I had never composed once, but somehow I've managed to do so and this is the result! Hmm, I wonder if it is ok? Say why don't you leave a feedback, "Hahaha". Anyway, lets share about what I've been through on yesterday Creative Studies lecture.

Sharply at 9.30 a.m I entered the AR0001 lecture room and settled down. Arround 10.00 a.m the lecture began. Although this is a brand new subject but the lecturers' face is quite familiar  Besides Mr. Radzi Bedu and Mr. Mustafa whom originally from the Media Appreciation subject there was only one new lecturer and he is Mr. Yap Sau Bin and to be honest, I still don't understand why was he playing with the Google Translate just before the introduction brief.

As usual an introduction brief was given by our course's boss, Mr.Radzi Bedu. Roughly "Creative" is an idea development or thinking to solve or create things. Creative belongs to everyone not only the domain user and it can be defined as a process (as creativity start from a basic idea and evolves to a more well structured idea and so on until it reaches a final output).

What so interesting about yesterday was Mr. Radzi shared us the secret to be rich. He said to be a rich man we need to have resources, effort and lastly creativity. Then he also said that our brains need sensors to enable thinking, without information from the sensors our brains are useless and furthermore he said that answering using memory is definitely not a thinking.

After every lecturers had given the opportunity to speak and brief us the assignments our first day class ended around 12.00 p.m. Oh ya, by the way I like the "crazy" yet fun idea of Mr. Yap on what can the small pink toy does. Anyway I would like to say that yesterday was a good start!
