Today is the last lecture with Mr. Yap.
He started his lecture around 10.10 a.m. and it was all about how great ideas come from and how to get creative? He began to ask around on "what is newness, invention, novelty, innovation and how you define them?" Actually, newness is anything that we haven't experienced before and it can be very personal. Things that I found new may not be also new to you as you may experienced it before I do! Human often sees new as a pattern, a combination of all the possibility. The pattern need to be surrounded by something dull in order to form new. For example,
Once you have created this new pattern and so you get your creativity! In other words, creativity is also the ability to recognize new pattern. This also means that to get creativity, you need to look at pattern.
Just like newness, creativity has 2 stages, the individual and the society. Things that creative to you (personal) may not be creative to the outer sphere (the society) as the society has various of experiences.
Once you have created this new pattern and so you get your creativity! In other words, creativity is also the ability to recognize new pattern. This also means that to get creativity, you need to look at pattern.

Clearly stated in Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's diagram creativity has small "c" and capital "C". The small "c" is individual creativity that base on personal idea, experiences, talent and satisfaction. The capital "C" is what changes the world and in order to do that it has to be understand and accepted by the masses. This is not easily done as it require to access the domain and gain supports from many fields. Thus he claimed that creativity happens between person thought and social cultural context.
New ideas have its place in creativity. Steven Johnson have done a great explanation on "how great ideas come from".

He said, idea is an network also is a new network neuron pattern. What he was trying to say is that idea is a combination of many thought. People take idea from other and recombine them to form a new idea. For example a bicycle is built by taking in ideas from the wheels, mechanism, pedals, gears and so many more. Thus to find new idea we need to provide a space of discussion a space that shares our thought. He even demystify that all ideas in the world are came out on the spot, it always require a flow of time. Newton did not have the thought of gravity when the apple fallen but a feeling of something interesting but haven't had the right tool to discover it yet.
Moving on, Mr. Yap explained that invention is something that created where novelty is the quality of being new and innovation is something that changes the way of people act. Hah! many of us have beginning loosing patient as he explained, to be honest, me too!
